School Supplies – We recommend getting the following

  • Lined paper appropriate for your grade level
  • Pens and pencils
  • Colored pencils
  • Crayons and markers (grades K-6)
  • Paint supplies such as watercolors, acrylics, brushes, small canvases
  • Drawing Paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Protractor (grades 7-12)
  • Construction Paper
  • Printer paper

Software – For grades 3 and up, we recommend the following types of

  • Word processor such as Microsoft Word
  • Slide Presentation software such as Power Point
  • Email account, network, or online storage/file system for sharing work between student and parent/teacher
  • A drawing program such as Photoshop, Corel Draw, GIMP, or FireAlpaca


This Years Curriculum
Palomar K12 curriculum for Ninth Graders is a packed day of reading, writing, strategizing, and collaborating. Below is an outline of the curriculum.

Reading/Literature 9

  • Cite strong and thorough evidence to support analysis of what a text says
  • Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development, how the text is shaped by details, and provide an objective summary
  • Analyze how the author unfolds an analysis of ideas or events, including their order, and how they are introduced, and the connections between them
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases used in a text, including figurative and technical meanings
  • Analyze in detail how an author’s ideas or claims are developed and refined by particular sentences, paragraphs or portions of the text
  • Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze
  • Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums
  • Evaluate the arguments of a text and assess whether or not the reasoning is valid
  • By the end year, read and comprehend literary nonfiction

Language Arts 9

  • Write arguments to support claims in an analysis or texts using reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence
  • Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas
  • Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective techniques, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences
  • Produce clear and coherent writing  appropriate to tasks
  • Develop and strengthen writing by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on what is most significant for the purpose
  • Conduct short as well as more detailed  research projects, and gather data from print and digital sources using advanced searching techniques
  • Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis and research
  • Write routinely over extended time frames
  • Grade level spelling words

Math 9 (Algebra 2)

  • Interpret the structure of expressions
  • Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems
  • Operations on polynomials
  • Create equations that describe numbers or relationships
  • Reasoning with equations and inequalities

History/Social Studies 9

  • Physical geography of the earth and geographic terminology
  • How the arts have affected and/or are a reflection of each culture
