School Supplies – We recommend getting the following

  • Lined paper appropriate for your grade level
  • Pens and pencils
  • Colored pencils
  • Crayons and markers (grades K-6)
  • Paint supplies such as watercolors, acrylics, brushes, small canvases
  • Drawing Paper
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Protractor (grades 7-12)
  • Construction Paper
  • Printer paper

Software – For grades 3 and up, we recommend the following types of

  • Word processor such as Microsoft Word
  • Slide Presentation software such as Power Point
  • Email account, network, or online storage/file system for sharing work between student and parent/teacher
  • A drawing program such as Photoshop, Corel Draw, GIMP, or FireAlpaca


This Years Curriculum
Palomar K12 curriculum for Second Graders is a packed day of reading, writing, thinking, and strategizing. Below is an outline of the curriculum.

Reading/Literature 2

  • Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why and how to demonstrate understanding of details in a text
  • Recount stories including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message.
  • Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges
  • Describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a text
  • Describe overall structure of a story, beginning, ending and actions
  • Understand differences in points of views of characters
  • Use information from illustrations and text to demonstrate understanding of characters, settings, and plot
  • Compare contrast and versions in stories
  • Read and comprehend literature by year end
  • Quote from a text when explaining a text
  • Determine a story’s theme and summarize a text
  • Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story by drawing on specific details
  • Explain how chapters or scenes fit together
  • Describe how a narrator’s point of view can determine how events are described
  • Analyze visual and multimedia elements to determine the meaning of a text
  • Compare and contrast stories in the same genre
  • Describe the connection between historical or technical events in a text
  • Know and use text features such as captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, menus, etc.
  • Identify the main purpose of a text and what the author wants to describe

Language Arts 2

  • Write texts that introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to create points, and provide a concluding statement
  • Write narratives that recount events in a sequence, use details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings
  • Focus on topics and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing
  • Participate in shared research and writing, record observations
  • Recall information from experiences or gather information from sources to answer a question
  • Write an opinion piece on topics or texts supporting a point of view with reasons and information
  • Write informative texts to examine a topic and convey ideas clearly
